Some of my favourites from albums that have come out the last couple of months:

Drumhead Trial - Protest the Hero (Volition is album of the year, as far as I'm concerned)
Dementia - Erra (most promising new(ish) metalcore band in a long time)
Deficit - Russian Circles
Illumination Theory - Dream Theater (best song they've written since their early days)
Falling Back to Earth - Haken

Alter Bridge's Calm the Fire is also fucking solid. those riffs.

I could never get into PtH. I remember back in High School when everyone was listening to them and I was just like, meh.

Granted I haven't heard anything since Fortress, and I absolutely abhor the song Bloodmeat which is all I really remember.

They aren't for everyone, but they're one of the more unique metalcore bands out there, and have a vocalist that can actually sing. Fortress is an incredible album, especially if you're a fan of more complex metal (so many time signature changes). Volition is, however, a far more fun album.

and Bloodmeat is excellent, but it's by far the simplest song on the album.

I'll definitely give them another shot, they seem to be closer to my scene now than way back then.

I used to think bands like BtBaM and Dillinger were just random noise, but things have changed considerably, so they deserve a second chance from me I suppose.

A friend showed me Coulrophobia/Anablephobia from Silent Circus and it freaked me out.

For someone who at the time didn't even listen to the simplest of metal, it seemed like chaos.

Now they're one of the more melodic metal bands I listen to.

https://www.youtube....h?v=sX6I2NrguAs (Short People - Randy Newman)

https://www.youtube....QXaI&feature=kp (Apocalypse Dreams - Tame Impala)

https://www.youtube....h?v=1a6NzSuUosI (Athol-brose - Cocteau Twins)

https://www.youtube....h?v=_8JuS6KlDvw (Love Is Not Enough - Owen)

https://www.youtube....h?v=e-W1mmh79Y4 (High - Freddie Gibbs and Madlib)

https://www.youtube....h?v=NLb8jWYvYmU (Powa - Tune-Yards)

Short People is just damn fucking catchy and hilarious. Recently started listening to: Randy Newman, Rickie Lee Jones, Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Neil Young, etc. Kinda just picked out some stuff to listen to in the span of two days.

Tama Impalai is the shit, they have a very genuine psychedelic/garage sound while also being unique in their own way. Really dig that album, Lonerism. The Cocteau Twins is another band I really like and have recently gotten into as I try to explore good music from the 80s/90s. The create both full, vibrant sounding music and sparse, ethereal sounds (in contrast). The song I posted is of the former, but if you're interested in the latter, check out their album Victorialand; just Elizabeth Fraser's shrill vocals and an atmospheric backing guitar. If it weren't for Powa, Love is Not Enough would probably be my favorite song up there, for the poetry and guitar work. Mike Kinsella is a cool dude with many projects, Owen being his solo endeavor, and I really like his distinct speak-singing-prose style.

@Yosh: Check out that Freddie Gibbs album, it's dope as fuck.

And Tune-Yards is one of my favorite things recently, seeing her next week and very excited about. She's an unconventional and quirky musician, but extremely fuckin' talented. If you liked the song I posted check this out (https://www.youtube....h?v=UNkP-mbBMLo).

Will do, cause you're finally listening to a lot of shit from my era instead of gabbing on about Kendrick Lamar ;)

Van Morrison is a nice choice, as is Neil Young. Try some Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Sorry man, Kendrick's the king. And CSN is one of the folk groups I ever listened to.
