Viktor Von is definitely a lot more Wu-adjacent than any other human alive. IMO the villain is an honorary shogun at this point.

You a vinyl man, Mav?

Alright, hip-hop:

Those instrumentals are by a band called Badbadnotgood. Despite their name, they're actually really good.

https://www.youtube....h?v=WZ3XrlMQYDc

https://www.youtube....h?v=bl6EomECg2Q

https://www.youtube....h?v=JCHTX_pgw6A

Yeah thank you Krevin for getting me hip to badbadnotgood, listened to their latest album and they're pretty great. very glad i made this thread if I can expect constant, great music recommendations.

What rap/hip-hop you been listenin' to lately? Yosh is an oldfag and only listens to 90s shit so I got no one to talk about new stuff with

MF DOOM + RZA = Biochemical equation, great fookin song.

This one just adds credence to the theory that MF DOOM is a wu member separated at birth.

Yeah Yosh you hip to Victory Laps? As I said earlier Doomstarks was supposed to drop waaaaaay long ago but seems like they are finally getting there shit together. Personally I think a Doom release is always exciting, whoever he happens to be collab'ing with.

Also, I finally got around to listening to 36 Chambers, 'twas pretty great. I don't know what I was expecting but I'm sure I wasn't expecting that, it's pretty unlike any other rap I've heard. Which was cool. I guess I thought they were more along the lines of gangsta rap but not really, kinda hardcore but they definitely don't sport the gangsta motifs. Also did not realize they were all about comic books and kung-fu movies but then it seemed supremely obvious that they would be when I started listening to them lol. But yeah they're pretty unique, the only other thing that I could compare them to is Doom who definitely does his own thing and doesn't really fall under any sub-genre or category, so I dug it a lot.

Metal:

Since were on the topic of metal I might as well go out on a limb and ask for some recommendations. I want some definite br00tal shit, something I can beat my newborn baby too As you might have guessed, metal is not something I'm all too familiar with. It's not that I'm averse to the sound of metal, although screamo/screaming is one of the few sounds in music that I generally do not like, so none of that please. But yeah, it's a big genre with a shitton of sub genres and I haven't had and particular motivation to delve into. That being said: Dave you remember that mixtape you made for the competition a little while back? I don't know if you'd call that "metal" or "progressive rock" or whatever, I liked everything on it (was actually my favorite mixtape, still listen to it sometimes). That's essentially my only exposure to metal, so anything along those lines, are anything that would be a natural progression from that, I'm all ears.

Other shit:

"Br00tal shite" is actually a small portion of what I listen to. The majority falls into similar categories as this.

Glad to hear people actually like it.

Yeah, if you're into that clean, polished, semi-synthy indie sound I have a couple of band recommendations: Bombay Bicycle Club and Lucius. All of Bombay's stuff is solid imo, can't really go wrong. Gonna give Lucius a special shout out tho; they kind of have a retro vibe goin' on, both with there music and style, and they only have one record out right now but I think it's pretty great, I'd check it out. I guess I'd describe them as indie pop, but more along the lines of 60s pop if that makes any sense.

I would listen to vinyl exclusively if it wasn't so expensive/ hard to acquire. The only place to buy vinyls in my entire province is a 5 hour drive from where I live, so I pretty much have to order online.

Dave is definitely the metal savant around here, but I think I'm solid enough to make a few recommendations. Although, a lot of these will probably be more toward the mainstream side of the genre.

And no screaming? Fair enough.

Deftones are a pretty good place to start I figure. More of an Alternative Metal sound, sorta shoegaze vibe, no screaming, occasional shout for emphasis but nothing brutal. Just the same, their rhythm is usually really abstract, so it might sound a bit odd if you aren't used to it.

https://www.youtube....h?v=qksTlo_1Tpw

https://www.youtube....h?v=woAcXSMyCEw

Affiance is pretty basic Metalcore, but no screaming. And their vocalist has absurd range.

https://www.youtube....h?v=4fNciuYKXDM This one really shows off the vocals, but the intrumentation is admittedly kinda meh.

https://www.youtube....h?v=ckEa2-RhmmI This one is from the second album, which is much better IMO.

I'm gonna ease in a few bands with small amounts of screaming.

The Empire Shall Fall.

https://www.youtube....h?v=9KZtDwWvGlQ This song has screaming for the first minute or so, but it's basically all clean for the rest fo the song.

Stone Sour. Minimal screaming, great melodies, still fairly heavy. The newest double album, House of Gold and Bones (Part 1&2) is pretty progressive and the musicianship is excellent. Corey's scream is pretty mellow compared to most, and he doesn't use it much in the new album.

https://www.youtube....h?v=wJuEjAo4ues

https://www.youtube....h?v=z90rO9A_xbw This one is especially fantastic.

Mastodon. New album is rad, but a bit of a far cry from what they used to be.

https://www.youtube....h?v=Sp7CYvh8FwA

https://www.youtube....h?v=jN4B6bGm0Ao

In Flames. Now this is a stretch, I don't expect you to like it. They used to be a Melodic Death Metal band, but the last 2 albums have been fairly clean Alt. Metal.

https://www.youtube....h?v=ylfn0o66jwM

Skyharbor. Seems unfair to Dave to suggest them, seeing as he introduced me to them and is undoubtedly a bigger fan than I, but whatever.

https://www.youtube....h?v=pIL7UsNXmAo

https://www.youtube....h?v=pBM_6mZ6TqQ

Lacuna Coil. Kinda Gothic, but they have a female vocalist, and she's actually really good. The crazy thick italian accent can be a little distracting sometimes, but eh.

https://www.youtube....h?v=MvYTDZAANsc

https://www.youtube....h?v=VTT6picaCoQ

Katatonia. Not very heavy, but still great.

https://www.youtube....h?v=oz7E_BsKrVI

https://www.youtube....h?v=TkWXDAcREJE There's another version of this one which isn't metal at all, but I admittedly like it better: https://www.youtube....h?v=gnVjaJi8m2A

Long post is long.

If anyone wants a good Jrock band to listen to, look up One On Rock on YouTube. They've been my fave band for a while. I think they fit into alternative rock most, but I don't know a lot about music. They've got fully Japanese, some mostly English, and other more half and half songs. The singer Taka, speaks English really well. I'd probably compare them to Rise Against, if that type of thing interests you music wise.

Edit: I think one of their songs is in the Black Rock Shooter game and another in the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie.

So, the Grammys happened last night.

It was full of ups and downs this year.

Sam Smith cleaned house, much to my chagrin. But hey, Beck did pretty good too. And at least he can write and perform his own music.

Kendrick won rap performance and song of the year for "I" so I'm pleased there.

Super hyped that Rosanne Cash won three Grammys for Americana/Roots songs/albums. The River and the Thread was so good.

I like how "Best Surround Sound Album" is a thing. I guess they had to get Beyonce a Grammy somehow.

Tenacious D winning the Metal Grammy? Leaves me with a weird feeling. I love these guys, and I love that it was a tribute to Dio, but still. They're a comedy duo, and things like Mastodon's High Road are most definitely a better true "Metal Performance."

The Gospel Grammys were all very satisfying, but I'm the only one who cares about that I guess.

Anyway, anyone else have any comments?

Oh, and Kanye is still one of the worst scumbag humans on earth.

I wouldn't even care if he did the same thing as before, it would've just been funny. But to say after the fact that Beck should "Respect artistry" and give his Grammy to Beyonce because her album was better, that's not cool in any way.

And the idea of any of Beyonce's albums being considered "Art" is laughable.

Beck handled it perfectly, either way.

okay but Bey had the fastest selling album OF ALL TIME

I mean I love Beck and I'm happy for him but I also didn't even know he had a new album.

and tell me, why shouldn't Beyonce's music be considered art? What is art and why do you believe that Beyonce doesn't amount to that definition.

K, if you're gonna pull that out, then let me rephrase.

The very idea that someone can percieve Beyonce's soulless cookie-cutter manufactured music, which is written and produced by a big budget record label simply to promote the money-making icon they've created from her, as "real art" when compared to what Beck has done, blows my mind.

But alas, music and art are entirely subjected to opinion and personal interpretation. Which makes my views, as well as anyone elses, null and void by default to anyone but themselves.

Yup. Subjective. The only thing that is objective is sales. And as for the claims that Beyoncé is less of an artist based off of who writes her music: she is still the head writer for pretty much all of her songs. She doesn't just write something by herself and then hope for the best, she runs ideas off people and her friends share ideas with her. You know who else literally does the exact same thing? Beck. Besides, the award isn't for best songwriter, it's best album. In theory, it's supposed to be awarded to the album that was the greatest of the year. One of the most common positive critiques of Beck's new album is that the production quality was amazing. Beck isn't an audio engineer, that wasn't him, it still affects the album. The biggest reason Beck won over Beyoncé was because of how few people he had to compete with in his own genre. He was one of the only (if not THE only) rock albums nominated, and so the Grammy panelists that were voting for the rock genre weren't divided amongst multiple artists. That's literally the reason. Bey had the numbers to prove it, she had some of the all time greatest critic reviews of all time, far better than Beck's. I know critic reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt because they are biased so often, but I'd trust the opinion of somebody who gets paid to have opinions.

I don't trust anyone's opinion. Until I've listened to something myself, I will not make any comments or judgement on it. I don't trust anyone when it comes to opinionated topics, because there is no way that everyone will completely agree.

You do make fair points. For me, I just get riled up by the modern music industry in its entirety. Everything is so dependant on marketing and publicity, which is so far from what music should be about. It just makes me sad to see people who work their asses of and are tremendously talented struggle in a scene where a dude with a MacBook can make a muilti-million selling record.

But, people buy what they want. So if recycled dance beats and shallow repetitive lyrics are what the public want from their music, I guess that just makes me a non-conformist.
