This one might require more work than most are willing to put in, but I have a ton of time to kill, and this seemed like a cool idea.

1993- Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)

1994- Super Metroid (SNES)

1995- Earthbound (SNES)

1996- Crash Bandicoot (PSX)

1997- Megaman X4 (PSX)

1998- Pokemon Red (GB), Honorable mention to Ocarina of Time (N64)

1999- Street Fighter III 3rd Strike (Arcade)

2000- Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PSX)

2001- Pokemon Crystal (GBC)

2002- Metroid Prime (GCN)

2003- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN)

2004- Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)

2005- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GCN)

2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN), Honorable mention to Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

2007- Pokemon Pearl (NDS)

2008- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

2009- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)

2010- Mass Effect 2 (PS3)

2011- Batman: Arkham City (PS3)

2012- Mass Effect 3 (PS3)

2013- Saints Row IV (PS3)

2014- Super Smash Bros. (WiiU)

2015- Bloodborne (PS4)

2016- This year was dope. Probably Street Fighter V, Dark Souls 3, or Uncharted 4.

2017- I haven't played the big games from this year, but Breath of the Wild seems like it would be my pick.

Okay. I'm procrastinating a shitload of homework and this seems like a good way to waste time.
Disclaimer: Most of these are based on JP release dates because google shows JP release dates when you google "List of games released in (year)" but the first few are based on US dates because I was using Wikipedia.

1991 - Super Mario World (SNES)
1992 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) Honorable Mention: Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (GB)
1993 - Super Street Fighter II (SNES)
1994 - Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
1995 - Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
1996 - Pokemon Red and Blue (GB)
1997 - Goldeneye 007 (N64)
1998 - Sonic Adventure (DC)
1999 - Donkey Kong 64 (N64) or Pokemon Gold and Silver (GBC) Honorable Mention: Jet Force Gemini (N64)
2000 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PSX) or Marvel vs Capcom 2 (Arcade)
2001 - Super Smash Brothers Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube released in 2001 by HAL Laboratories (GCN)
2002 - Kingdom Hearts (PS2) Honorable Mention: Super Mario Sunshine (GCN)
2003 - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (GCN)
2004 - Halo 2 (Xbox)
2005 - Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
2006 - Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (NDS)
2007 - Halo 3 (Xbox 360) Honorable Mention: Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (Wii)
2008 - Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
2009 - Street Fighter 4 (PS3)
2010 - Halo: Reach (Xbox 360) or Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver (NDS)
2011 - Pokemon Black and White (NDS)
2012 - Halo 4 (Xbox 360)
2013 - Pokemon X and Y (3DS)
2014 - Super Smash Bros. 4 (WiiU)
2015 - Star Wars Battlefront (PS4)
2016 - Street Fighter V (PS4)
2017 - 1-2-Switch! (Switch)

This list made me realize just how detached I've become from video games over the past decade. I've played almost nothing new this year, and only about 5 games from 2016. I need to work on that.
EDIT: You can't really tell how detached I've become based on the list, since from the start there are a few titles that have consistently risen to the top. But in earlier years I had to really think about which games were my favorite, whereas in the more recent years I had to figure out which games I've even bothered to play.

Starting from 97 because I haven't played any games from before then on their original systems and it's therefore pretty messy in terms of release dates (eg. played FF6 when it came out on PS1 in like 2001).

Didn't put a whole lot of thought into this.

1997: Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
1998: Pokemon Red/Blue (GB)
1999: System Shock 2 (PC)
2000: Baldur's Gate II (PC)
2001: Final Fantasy X (PS2)
2002: Metroid Prime (GC)
2003: Golden Sun: The Lost Age (GBA)
2004: Half Life 2 (PC)
2005: Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)
2006: Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
2007: Bioshock (PC)
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
2009: Uncharted 2 (PS3)
2010: Mass Effect 2 (PC)
2011: Witcher 2 (PC)
2012: Guild Wars 2 (PC)
2013: The Last of Us (PS3)
2014: Dragon Age Inquisition (PC)
2015: Witcher 3 (PC)
2016: Uncharted 4 (PS4)
2017: Persona 5 (PS4)

2006: Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

2017: Persona 5 (PS4)

Have you played the Zodiac Age remake? Personally I felt like FFXII's system held up pretty good by modern standards anyway, and this is definitely a nice fine-tuning of an already solid mechanic. Also a fast-forward toggle is a life saver for this game. So good.

I haven't played P5 yet, and I really want to. This year had some amazing releases, so if you're naming this as your favourite then I'm going to assume that it lives up to my expectations.

Dude, I hear you. I've played maybe 10% of the major releases from the last 5 years, and it's starting to make me feel a bit detached from modern gaming. I'm basically picking up scraps whenever I can for cheap (Only just played Dark Souls 3 last month, because it was like $30 on PSN, bought Yooka-Laylee yesterday for like $25). Being a poor college student has been brutal on my gaming library. If I actually bought all the games I wanted on release, I'd be spending like $200 a week, and that's not viable.

It's a mix of Japanese and North American dates, mainly Japanese dates. Also, some are sort of merely the default best, out of me only having played a few one year but not absolutely loved any of em. And some years' games(mainly more recent ones) I would've picked as my favorite, but have yet to play so I only chose between what I have played.

1991 - Final Fantasy IV (released this year on SNES but I played on DS)
1992 - Super Mario Kart (SNES)
1993 - N/A cause I don't think I've really played anything from this year
1994 - Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
1995 - Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
1996 - Mario Kart 64 (N64)
1997 - Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
1998 - Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
1999 - Donkey Kong 64 (N64)
2000 - Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
2001 - Shadow Hearts (PS2)
2002 - Resident Evil 0 (GCN)
2003 - Tales of Symphonia (GCN)
2004 - Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (GCN)
2005 - Mario Party 7 (GCN)
2006 - Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess (GCN)
2007 - Persona 3 (PS2)
2008 - Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
2009 - Pokemon HeartGold (DS)
2010 - Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
2011- Unchained Blades (3DS)
2012 - Fantasy Life (3DS)
2013 - Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) Was difficult to choose between this, Pokemon X and Etrian Odyssey IV.
2014 - Disgaea 4 (Vita) On Vita it released in 2014 and it's got enough exclusive additions and updates from the PS3 original, that I'm counting it
2015 - Stella Glow (3DS)
2016 - Stardew Valley (PS4)
2017 - Legend of Zelda Breath of the WIld (Wii U)

I cheated some where I could. Like how I chose FFIV even though I only played the DS version many years later. And at times I'd have two equally great games release the same Japanese year, and if the next year didn't have many faves I'd go with the North American date for the second game XD Also, I'm glad I found this topic. I might consider writing an opinion piece at the end of the year for that site I volunteer for, but I'll need to majorly modify my list to only be NA release dates and not cheating with stuff like FFIV. Or I might stick with Japanese release dates and change the NA dates I went off of to other games.

Yeah, I have got the FFXII remaster. Haven't put too much time into it, but I definitely prefer the zodiac job system over the original mechanics. and all JRPGs should have fast forward pls

And yes P5 is incredible. And really, really long. I'd actually probably say that I enjoyed Nier Automata more from a story/structure perspective, and Horizon Zero Dawn from a gameplay/holy shit this looks incredible perspective, but P5 has so much content and is so crazy that I had to put it above them .

Now I understand. Your cagey behavior is because of political aspirations, isn't it?!

I'll figure out the years later, and I'll leave out the MOBAs, they would fill like 6 years worth.

200? Mega Man Battle Network

200? FFX

200? FE7

Pokemon Ruby

Rome: Total War

2006? Savage: The Battle for Newerth

Eternal Sonata

Nier

FE Awakening

2016 FE Fates?

2017 Nier Automata

Maybe I would have been better off never playing video games? It's hard to give up the experience of the Niers though. The original Nier was so beautiful. Hearing it would have a sequel was unbelievable. And the sequel actually being good was a miracle. And what would I most likely have done instead? Judging by most people, watch a shitload of TV.

*shrug* it beats watching tv, but that's like saying "at least my dick isnt technically a micropenis". my dick is still short. eh, bad analogy.

in any case, i dont feel too guilty about wasting time on video games. more guilty about wasting time on other shit.

The "video games are a waste of time" argument is BS.

Everyone has a hobby. Some guys waste all their time watching football. Other people run all day long. Some people read books.

I play videogames. It's all the same.

Will edit later. Will prolly do this in a different manner.

The edit everyone was waiting for >_>

I honestly don't when I started, I know my first game was

early 1990's Super Mario Bro 3: NES - My family stayed up that christmas weekend as a whole until we beat the game.

mid 90's I remember playing Mortal Kombat, and Sonic but eh.

1993: MegaMan X. This is where my love for the series began.

1994: EarthWorm Jim.

1995: Family moved to Texas. I remember my brother and I getting our PSX. We originally got; Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi

1996: PokeMon Blue.

1997: Final Fantasy 7.

1998: Resident Evil 2.

1999: Ape Escape was the bee's knees back then for me.

2000: Phantasy Star Online. That game was so ahead of it's time.

2001: Halo: Combat Evolved/ Super Smash Bro's Melee.

2002: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2

2003: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

2004: Halo 2. Never Forget.

From 2004-2006 it was primarily Halo 2 and Smash bro's Melee

2007: Halo 3

2008: Super Smash Bro's. Brawl

2009: Borderlands.

2010: Halo Reach

2011:KotR 2

2012: Borderlands 2.

2013: Pokemon X.

2014: Destiny

2015: BloodBorne

2016: DarkSouls 3

2017: Destiny 2

2018: Monster Hunter World.

2019: TBD.
